I

Iron Ore

Iron ore is a rock or mineral from which metallic iron can be extracted economically. It constitutes the primary raw material for steelmaking. The ores commonly mined for iron contain iron oxides (primarily hematite, Fe₂O₃, and magnetite, Fe₃O₄).

Iron Ore Concentrate

A product of iron ore beneficiation that has been processed to increase the iron content by removing impurities. Typical iron ore concentrates have an Fe content between 65% and 70%.

Iron Ore Fines

Fine-grained iron ore with particle size less than 6.3mm, typically used in sintering processes before being charged into blast furnaces. Fines represent the majority of iron ore traded globally.

Iron Ore Lump

Iron ore in the form of irregular particles ranging in size from 6.3mm to 31.5mm. Lump ore can be charged directly into blast furnaces without agglomeration, typically commanding a premium over iron ore fines.

Incoterms

International Commercial Terms that define the responsibilities of sellers and buyers for the delivery of goods in international transactions. Common terms in metals trading include FOB (Free On Board), CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight), and DDP (Delivered Duty Paid).

F

Fe Content

The percentage of iron in iron ore, typically expressed as %Fe. Commercial iron ores range from 58% to 67% Fe content, with higher-grade ores commanding premium prices in the market.

Flux

Materials added to furnace charges to promote fluidity and remove impurities during smelting operations. Common fluxes include limestone and dolomite in ironmaking, and silica and borax in nonferrous metal production.

Ferroalloy

An alloy of iron with a high proportion of one or more other elements such as manganese, chromium, or silicon. Ferroalloys are used as additives in steelmaking to impart specific properties to the finished steel.
